It is with excitement for Bill and sadness for the University, that I write to announce that Bill McDade, Professor of Anesthesia & Critical Care and Deputy Provost for Research and Minority Issues has been appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at Ochsner Health System in New Orleans effective July 5, 2016.
Bill was appointed Deputy Provost in 2010. In this role Bill has substantively enhanced recruitment, promotion, and retention for underrepresented minority faculty. Among his many accomplishments in this role, he has overseen the growth of the Provost’s Career Enhancement Postdoctoral Scholarships and has helped attract several of those postdocs to the faculty.
Bill joined the faculty in 1994 and holds a PhD in Biophysics and Theoretical Biology from the University of Chicago and an M.D. from the Pritzker School of Medicine. A nationally recognized medical educator, Bill serves as a director for the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education, is a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and has chaired the American Medical Association’s Council on medical Education. In addition, Bill has carried out groundbreaking research and clinical care with a primary focus on the treatment of sickle cell disease and in clinical anesthesiology. Bill served as Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs in the Prizker School of Medicine. He has been an advocate for underrepresented minorities in medical education and is the founder of the Bowman Society, an advising organization that prepares young minority scholars, from high school students through junior faculty, for academic medicine careers.
Please join me in thanking Bill for his contributions to the University and congratulating him on his new position.
