Subject: University of Chicago’s 125th Anniversary
Date: January 23, 2015
The University of Chicago marks the 125th anniversary of its 1890 founding this calendar year. Important milestones such as this are an opportunity to reflect on the University’s history, members of the University community past and present, and the founding principles that continue to inform the University’s direction.
To guide an appropriate commemoration of this anniversary, we have convened a Faculty Advisory Committee, chaired by John W. Boyer, Dean of the College and Martin A. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor of History. This Committee will seek ideas from faculty, students, and staff, as it plans a series of lectures, panels, and other special events to take place over the 2015 Autumn Quarter. These events will aim to highlight historical achievements within and across disciplines in each division and school and, in doing so, engage the entire campus community—faculty, students, staff, and others—as well as our alumni and friends.
More detail about the 125th anniversary, including a schedule of events, will be provided at the outset of the Spring Quarter. In the interim, the Faculty Advisory Committee welcomes your ideas about ways to commemorate the University’s founding and history. Such ideas, which could range from academic departments looking to highlight their own historic moments or figures to student groups seeking to mark the anniversary with an event or project, can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org for the Faculty Advisory Committee’s consideration.
