Executive Vice Provost


As Executive Vice Provost, and an Officer of the University, Sian works on major strategic initiatives. Sian leads UChicagoGRAD, the University-wide office and initiative committed to ensuring that students and postdocs have the skills they need to become the next generation of leaders in academia, government, industry and the non-profit sector. She also oversees UChicago Urban, the University of Chicago’s integrative efforts to bridge urban scholarship, practice and engagement. In addition, Sian collaborates closely with University leaders on campus-wide space allocation and planning, the development of major building projects and works to ensure major academic centers at the University – from the Libraries to the University of Chicago Press – support the University’s research and education mission.

Sian Beilock is the Stella M. Rowley Professor in the Department of Psychology, Committee on Education and the College. In her research, she explores the brain and body factors that contribute to “choking under pressure” in all types of performance situations from test-taking, to public speaking, to athletics.

Sian has authored two books, the critically-acclaimed Choke and How the Body Knows Its Mind, and more than 100 publications. She has received funding from the National Science Foundation (including a CAREER award), the Department of Education and several foundations. She works extensively with educators and those involved in public policy, including recently serving on a National Research Council committee on decision-making and stress. 

Sian is a fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, a member of the National Academy of Kinesiology, and received early career awards from the Association for Psychological Science, American Psychological Foundation, the Psychonomic Society and the Society of Experimental Psychologists. Beilock received a BS in Cognitive Science from the University of California, San Diego, and PhDs in both Kinesiology and Psychology from Michigan State University.

A member of the University faculty since 2005, Sian joined the Provost’s office in Fall 2014 as Vice Provost for Academic Initiatives. She was named Executive Vice Provost in 2016.
