Graduate Student Space

In its report, the Committee on Graduate Education stated the need for graduate student space “for quiet individual study, co-curricular spaces for collaboration and academic forms of sociability, reservable spaces for office hours, and space to socialize with other graduate students.” Today, I am announcing the formation of a faculty-student working group to participate in a program study regarding graduate student space on campus, with a goal of establishing such space in the coming academic year.
The working group will include graduate students, faculty, and staff from UChicagoGRAD, the Office of the Provost, and Facilities Services. They will be charged with building on the Committee’s recommendations, outlining the multi-purpose needs for space, and working with the University to determine a suitable location and use plan. The Graduate Council will manage the application process for those who wish to join the working group, and all interested graduate students are strongly encouraged to apply here: https://forms.gle/CxUsbchiGqLELCfn9
The creation of this working group continues our commitment to addressing the recommendations of the Committee on Graduate Education and using a faculty-led process with significant student input to identify improvements. By the end of the month, I will provide a comprehensive update of what has been accomplished to date, the important work that is underway, and some of the changes we anticipate for the fall.
