Subject: Karen E. Kim Appointed Vice Provost for Research
Date: March 16, 2020
I am pleased to announce that Karen E. Kim has been appointed Vice Provost for Research.
Dr. Karen Kim, Professor of Medicine in the Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Dean for Faculty Affairs for the Division of the Biological Sciences, will assume the role of Vice Provost for Research, effective March 9. In this role, Karen will work with faculty and deans to support and enhance external research funding and manage large-scale research structures such as University Research Administration (URA) and the University of Chicago Consortium for Advanced Science and Engineering (CASE), the Office of Research Safety, Research Computing Center, and Research Development Support.
Karen has served as Associate Director of the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center and is the principal investigator on multiple grants, including from the NCI Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative. She is the founder and director of the University of Chicago Center for Asian Health Equity, the only research center dedicated to the study of Asian health disparities in the Midwest, and has dedicated significant time to advancing health through service to the Asian Health Coalition, National Council for Asian American Pacific Islander Physicians, and the CDC’s Hepatitis B Task Force, among others.
Karen is stepping into this role as we are facing unprecedented disruption to our research enterprise due to COVID-19. Karen has been leading a working group that is developing resources to support our researchers in reducing the number of people in on-campus laboratories and research facilities. I am confident she will provide capable leadership as we navigate this uncharted course together.
Please join me in congratulating Karen on her new administrative appointment, and please share this with your teams as appropriate.
