Subject: Partnership with the Marine Biological Laboratory
Date: November 23, 2020
I am pleased to announce a new initiative to strengthen the University’s partnership with the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and to help ensure our faculty and students are able to maximize research and teaching collaborations.
The initiative will be led by Neil Shubin, Senior Advisor to the Provost for the Life Sciences and the Robert R. Bensley Distinguished Service Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy. He will work closely with Nipam Patel, Director of the MBL and a Professor at the University, to broaden the footprint of MBL activities at the University, support the intellectual exchange between the two institutions, and establish joint programming for recruiting faculty, developing new courses and workshops, and supporting graduate students.
Building on the University’s tradition of rigorous inquiry and field-defining research, this renewed partnership provides an opportunity to address complex issues with global impact, such as environmental conservation, climate change, and advanced imaging of living systems, as well as to develop new organisms for experimental research to advance basic knowledge and improve human health.
The initiative reflects the University’s commitment to advancing knowledge, research, and impact in the sciences. I hope you will join me in supporting this effort.
