As we prepare for the upcoming election on January 31 and February 1 to consider a graduate student union at the University of Chicago, I write to share the updates we have received from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) regarding voting eligibility and logistics. Below you will find important information about voter eligibility and polling locations.
Who Is Eligible to Vote
Per the stipulated election agreement:
All graduate students enrolled in University of Chicago degree programs who are employed to provide instructional or research services, including but not limited to Teaching Assistants, Research Assistants, Course/Teaching Assistants, Graduate Student Instructors, Graduate Student Lecturers, Instructional Graders, Language Assistants, Preceptors, Research Interns, Teaching Consultants, CCTL Teaching Fellows, Teaching Interns, Teaching Lab Assistants, Tutors, Writing Interns, and Writing Lectors, in the Divinity School, the Crown Family School of Social Work Policy and Practice, Division of the Social Sciences, Division of the Humanities, Division of the Biological Sciences, Division of the Physical Sciences, Booth School of Business, Irving B. Harris School of Public Policy, and the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.
Those eligible to vote in the election are individuals who were/are employed in a unit position in any of the Spring, Summer, Fall 2022 quarters or in the Winter 2023 quarter; unless the person has graduated from or withdrawn from the program on the day on which they cast their vote.
Who Is Not Eligible to Vote
Per the stipulated election agreement:
Undergraduate students, graduate students who are not employed to provide instructional or research services, Workshop Coordinators, Peer Mentors, office clerical employees, managers, guards and supervisors as defined in the Act.
Time and Place of the Vote
Voting will take place on Tuesday, January 31, and Wednesday, February 1, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The NLRB’s Regional Director has specified that in-person voting will occur at Ida Noyes Cloister Club, the Joseph Regenstein Library, UChicagoGRAD Headquarters, and the William Eckhardt Research Center. Tomorrow, the University will send all eligible voters a Notice of Election that has additional, legally required information about the election, including details about polling locations. If you are an eligible voter, please review the Notice of Election distributed tomorrow to determine your polling location, which is based on your Division or School, or, in the event that you have been identified as performing your work duties outside the Chicago metropolitan area on the days of the election, instructions regarding your mail ballot.
The NLRB will collect all ballots and will count them on March 16, 2023.
The University encourages all students in the bargaining unit to make their voices heard in this election.
