Subject: Campus Update Following Unrest in Chicago
Date: August 10, 2020

This morning our community awoke to concerning images showing looting and unrest in Chicago.  I am writing to assure you that the safety and security of the community are always a priority. In response to the uncertain situation, the University is recommending the following:
  • Out of an abundance of caution and the potential for there to be unrest outside of the downtown business district, the University recommends that only employees who are fulfilling essential activities come to campus tonight and tomorrow.  Other employees or students whose in-person work has resumed since mid-June should consider not coming to campus unless absolutely necessary. Contact your supervisor or academic adviser if you have questions or concerns. UCMC/BSD employees should refer to guidance provided directly to you in an email earlier this afternoon.
  • Please take note that the City of Chicago has restricted access to downtown, effective tonight beginning at 8:00 pm and lasting until 6:00 am.
  • As a reminder, UChicago Student Wellness is available to support students impacted by these and other events and the Staff and Faculty Assistance Program (SFAP) offers support for University personnel.
Please follow local news outlets, as well as official social media accounts (such as the Chicago Mayor's office) for the latest updates on the situation. I also recommend signing up for the city's emergency alerts and the University's emergency notification system.
