Public Safety Advisory Council: Extended Call for Applications
To: Faculty, Other Academic Appointees, and Postdoctoral Researchers
From: Ka Yee C. Lee, Provost
Subject: Public Safety Advisory Council: Extended Call for Applications
Date: August 26, 2022
In May, President Alivisatos and I announced the launch of the Public Safety Advisory Council, one of several initiatives the University of Chicago has undertaken to address issues related to public safety through the active engagement of members of the campus and South Side communities. As that initial announcement was made during a very busy time of year, I am again reaching out to our academic community to make you aware of this important initiative and encourage you to consider applying to join the council by the extended deadline of Friday, September 16.
Composed of University academics, students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff, along with community members, the council will proactively seek feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders to identify public safety challenges and concerns. It will work closely with the Department of Safety and Security, including the University of Chicago Police Department, to support community awareness and understanding of our efforts to improve the safety and security of our shared community. Additionally, the group will provide counsel to the University to ensure that our public safety priorities, policies, and operations are informed by community input and feedback.
The Public Safety Advisory Council will include representation from various stakeholder groups within the University and South Side communities. Its members will include two tenure or tenure-track academic appointees, one other academic appointee, and one academic appointee specifically from the University of Chicago Medical Center. Additional information about the council’s structure, responsibilities, and application requirements are available on its website.
The University remains deeply committed to enhancing public safety on and around our campus, and this council will play an important role in that process. Please consider supporting this work by applying to serve on the council by Friday, September 16. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our safety efforts.
