Subject: Suspect Arrested for Murder of Shaoxiong “Dennis” Zheng
Date: November 12, 2021

This afternoon the Chicago Police Department (CPD) announced that it has arrested a suspect for the murder of UChicago alumnus Shaoxiong “Dennis” Zheng, who was shot during a robbery attempt near campus. The University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) has assisted CPD in the investigation and will continue to support these efforts.

Our concern continues for the pain that Dennis’ family, close friends, and members of the University community feel as a result of this terrible loss. More information about a memorial service for Dennis Zheng will be shared next week. We must make every effort to support each other in this time of grief.

We remain highly focused on the broader issues of safety and security in our immediate community and the city more widely, and we are approaching this issue with the urgency it demands, including short and longer-term actions. We will work together with City of Chicago leaders, community partners, and our internal community to address these issues in the days and months ahead.

Please remember that resources are available to assist all members of our community with coping in challenging times.
