As associate provost, Jim works with Vice Provost Katherine Kinzler to support the University of Chicago Charter School (UCCS) and other PK-12 public education initiatives. He works closely with the UCCS Board of Directors and school leadership at UCCS’s three campuses on strategic planning, organizational management, partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and professional learning and development.
Jim’s work in public education began as a teacher in the New Orleans Public Schools. In addition to teaching English in middle and high schools, he has worked as an instructional coach; professor of English education at the University of Delaware and University of New Orleans; and as a consultant to schools, districts, and state education agencies. Most recently he served as the inaugural executive director of the Danielson Group, a nonprofit organization that provides training and support to school administrators and teachers. He is co-author of the updated edition of the Framework for Teaching, one of the most widely used tools in teacher education and development.
Jim earned his PhD in Teaching & Learning from Vanderbilt University and his BA in English Literature from DePauw University. Outside of work he spends as much time as possible with his two kids, plays volleyball and tennis, travels, and loves going to concerts and the theater.
