Building upon the momentum gained with the announcement of the Logan Center, the Provost’s Working Group on Arts & Disciplines turned the University community’s attention to the interdisciplinary potential of the arts. Then-Provost Thomas F. Rosenbaum charged the committee to investigate the relationship between arts practitioners and other scholars in the arts, as well as the relationship between the arts and other disciplines across the University, and to recommend ways to better integrate these areas. The committee proposed, among other things, a space for short-term, experimental projects that crossed disciplinary boundaries—a space that would become the Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry.
