The University of Chicago has no institution-wide policy regarding the frequency or conditions of faculty leaves of absence; policies are the prerogative of the Divisions and Schools. The Office of the Provost approves leaves based on the appointive unit's policies and decanal recommendations. Faculty in the Crown School, the Divinity School, Humanities Division, and Social Sciences Division may consult their respective policies at Crown Research Leave Policy, Divinity School Faculty Research Leave Policy, Humanities Research Leave Program, or Social Sciences Faculty Research Program.
It is our general expectation that faculty members requesting leave will have sought outside support for their research or secured remuneration from the institution they intend to visit. In addition, we do not normally grant leaves of more than one year. A faculty member considering requesting a leave should be in touch with his or her chair and/or dean well in advance of the proposed leave.
